Perhaps it was Liszt's devotion to the Christian faith and his preoccupation with the legend of Faust, and the character of Mephistopheles in particular, which provided him with a great deal of musical inspiration. The first <i>Mephisto Valse</i> comes from the second of Two Episodes S. 110 (1861), titled <i>The Dance at the Village Inn<i/> and is by far the most familiar of the four waltzes. Striking and well-crafted, it is significant not just for its own dramatic impact, but also for its advanced chromatic idiom and phrasing, which has influenced subsequent Great composers like Wagner. <p>This version has been effectively and faithfully transcribed for Solo Violin by Nathan Milstein.
